Hormonal shifts can lead to stubborn "meno-belly," insulin resistance, and a sluggish metabolism that doesn't respond to traditional dieting or exercise. **MenoMe® Shake It Off®** is designed to address these specific metabolic changes using its hero ingredient: **Feiolix®**. What is Feiolix®? Feiolix® is a clinically-proven, patented whole fruit powder derived from premium New Zealand feijoas. Unlike standard fruit extracts, Feiolix® is standardised to preserve the fruit's full bioactive matrix, specifically focusing on its high concentration of **Abscisic Acid (ABA)**. How Feiolix® Supports Menopause Metabolism Feiolix® acts as a natural "gut-led metabolic ally" through several key biological pathways: - - **Natural GLP-1 Support:** Feiolix® is a natural GLP-1 agonist, stimulating the body's endogenous GLP-1 production. This hormone helps increase satiety (feeling full), delays gastric emptying, and regulates blood sugar levels. - **Insulin Sensitivity:** It contains high levels of ABA, which enhances insulin secretion and improves how muscle cells absorb glucose, helping to combat the insulin resistance often seen in menopause. - **Managing Cravings and Hunger:** By promoting satiety and reducing post-meal glucose crashes, Feiolix® helps manage feelings of hunger and intense cravings. - **Reduced Glucose Peaks:** Research shows Feiolix® can significantly smooth post-meal glucose curves, reducing breakfast glucose peaks by up to ~35% and high-GI snack peaks by up to ~50%. - **Anti-Inflammatory Benefits:** It contains ellagitannins, which have an anti-inflammatory effect that helps restore appetite regulation and maintain insulin sensitivity. The Shake It Off® Advantage While Feiolix® handles the metabolic heavy lifting, **Shake It Off®** also includes **Chromium**, an essential trace mineral that further supports healthy metabolism and blood sugar balance. This combination offers a "menopause-first" approach, helping you move away from restrictive dieting and toward long-term lifestyle changes that actually work for your changing body. Whether you are struggling with "meno-belly," frustration with shifting clothes, or a sudden loss of energy, Feiolix® provides the metabolic support needed to feel like yourself again. It is 3 p.m., you are staring into the pantry, and that persistent “food noise” is telling you to grab something sweet. Up to 97% of women say daily cravings derail their best intentions. It is exhausting, but it is not your fault. The body’s natural appetite control system, driven by a hormone signal called GLP-1, can easily get hijacked by daily stress, processed foods, and age. When GLP-1 pathways are working correctly, you easily stop eating when you are full, skip the afternoon sugar spiral, and completely forget about snacks between meals. If you are ready to reclaim control of your appetite without resorting to synthetic medications, painful injections, or extreme restriction, it is time to look to nature. Specifically, to a powerful New Zealand superfruit featured in a breakthrough wellness drink. The Secret in the Cup: Feiolix® Feijoa Powder The team at Evva formulated **GLP-1 Crave Control** to work directly with human biology. One of the foundational hero ingredients in their formula is **Feiolix®**, a premium, 100% natural feijoa whole-fruit powder grown right in the pristine orchards of New Zealand. Feijoa is a beloved, tangy green fruit famous for its rich aromatic flavour and deep wellness properties. When carefully dried into Feiolix® powder, it acts as a cellular powerhouse for the metabolism. Here is exactly how Feiolix® transforms a daily wellness routine inside Evva’s **GLP-1 Crave Control**: - - **Balances Blood Sugar:** Feiolix® helps keep blood glucose steady after eating. No huge insulin spikes mean no aggressive energy crashes later in the day. - **Ignites Metabolism:** It works alongside the body’s natural biology to optimize how hunger is processed and how fat is stored, keeping the metabolic engine running smoothly. - **Calms Inflammation:** Packed with natural defense markers and antioxidants, this whole-fruit superblend actively soothes the gut and reduces internal inflammation. **A Complete, Science-Backed Superblend** Feiolix® does not work alone. Evva blended this incredible New Zealand superfruit powder with other clinically proven, premium ingredients to tackle appetite dysfunction from every angle: - - **Satiereal™ Saffron:** Clinically proven to reduce snacking events by 55% and lower sugar cravings by 78%. - **Inulin Prebiotics & Probiotics:** Feeds the gut microbiome to naturally trigger internal “I’m full” signals. - **Chromium Picolinate:** Balances insulin response to put a stop to intense carb urges. - **Grains of Paradise & Green Tea Extract:** Gently fires up the metabolic furnace to increase the calories burned at rest by up to 17%. **What Real Women Are Saying** There is no need to swallow a handful of pills or force down chalky shakes. **GLP-1 Crave Control** mixes easily into a crisp, delicious peach iced tea that can be enjoyed every morning or early afternoon. Women are already experiencing life-changing results: *“The best way to describe this product is it has ‘turned off the food noise’ in my head, that pesky little voice that was constantly nagging and telling me to grab a snack!! The cravings have pretty much disappeared.”*, Rose W. *“I am craving ‘proper’ healthy food and not snacks/high fat sugar content. My bloating is down. I feel lighter and healthier.”*– Monique **Reclaim Your Vitality** Real transformation takes time. While most women notice a shift in food noise within the first 2 to 3 weeks, Evva recommends enjoying this daily peach iced tea consistently for 8 to 12 weeks to let Feiolix® and the other botanical activators fully restore natural metabolic pathways. No synthetic hormones. No nasty side effects. Just the body, working exactly the way nature intended. When food enters the small intestine, GLP-1 is secreted by L-cells in the gut, triggering several important effects: 1. **Insulin secretion**: GLP-1 stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, helping to lower blood sugar levels. 2. **Glucagon suppression**: It inhibits the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. 3. **Slowed gastric emptying**: GLP-1 delays the rate at which food leaves the stomach, promoting a feeling of fullness. 4. **Appetite reduction**: It acts on the brain to decrease hunger and food intake. These combined effects make GLP-1 a powerful tool in managing weight and blood sugar levels. This is why GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic have become popular for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity[.](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/how-semaglutide-and-similar-drugs-act-on-the-brain-and-body-to-reduce-appetite) ### **Abscisic Acid: The Hidden Gem in Feiolix** ![Abscisic acid (ABA)](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/A102.png) This is where **abscisic acid** (ABA) comes into play. Found naturally in fruits and vegetables, ABA has been shown to stimulate the secretion of GLP-1. Here’s the kicker: feijoas contain the highest concentration of ABA among all fruits and vegetables, with an impressive 4.29 mg/kg.Abscisic acid is not just a plant hormone – it’s also produced in small amounts in human cells. In our bodies, ABA has several important functions: - **Insulin Sensitivity**: ABA can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, similar to the effects of insulin itself. - **Anti-inflammatory effects**: It can reduce inflammation in various tissues, which may contribute to improved metabolic health - **Thermogenesis**: ABA may increase energy expenditure by promoting the conversion of white fat to brown fat, which burns more calories - **GLP-1 stimulation**: ABA has been shown to stimulate the secretion of GLP-1 from intestinal L-cells. This means that ABA can help increase your body’s natural GLP-1 production. - **Dual Action**: Interestingly, there’s a positive feedback loop between ABA and GLP-1. While ABA stimulates GLP-1 secretion, GLP-1 also stimulates ABA release from pancreatic cells. - **Highest Natural Concentration**: Feijoas have the highest concentration of ABA among fruits and vegetables, making Feiolix an exceptionally rich source of this beneficial compound. ### **Feiolix: Harnessing the Power of Feijoa** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Feijoas.jpg) Feiolix isn’t just another fruit powder. It’s a concentrated source of ABA, with feijoas containing the highest concentration among fruits and vegetables. This makes Feiolix a unique and potent supplement for supporting metabolic health. Feiolix is a whole fruit powder made from New Zealand feijoas, standardized to contain more than 4 mg/100g of ABA. By incorporating Feiolix into your diet, you’re giving your body a natural boost of ABA, which in turn can help: 1. **Increase insulin secretion** from pancreatic β cells 2. **Enhance glucose absorption** by skeletal muscle cells 3. **Regulate metabolism** by decreasing inflammation and increasing GLP-1 secretion 4. **Increase satiety**, helping you feel fuller for longer 5. **Boost postprandial thermogenesis**, potentially reducing weight gain ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/F001.jpg) ### **The Science Behind Feiolix** In a preclinical study, mice on a high-fat diet were given Feiolix at different dosages. The results were impressive: Feiolix at a low dose of 300 mg per day was as effective as metformin (a diabetes medication) in significantly reducing elevated fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/f002.jpg) ### **A Three-Pronged Approach** What makes Feiolix truly unique is its triple mechanism of action: 1. **ABA-induced GLP-1 secretion**: The high ABA content stimulates your body’s natural GLP-1 production. 2. **Gut microbiome support**: Feiolix contains dietary fibers that promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which in turn can trigger GLP-1 secretion 3. **Polyphenol GLP**–**1 Secretion**: Recent research has shown that polyphenols such as the catechins present in Feiolix are capable of inducing GLP-1 secretion in addition to lower inflammation in the brain to stop disruptive hunger signals ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/f003.jpg) ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/f004.jpg) ### **The Gut Microbiome: Your Inner Ecosystem** Feiolix contains dietary fibers that act as prebiotics, nourishing beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria, in turn, produce compounds that can further stimulate GLP-1 production, creating a virtuous cycle of metabolic support. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/f005.jpg) ### **The Science Behind Feiolix** Our research has shown that Feiolix can promote the growth of various probiotics by up to over 300% compared to control groups. This synbiotic effect underscores Feiolix’s potential as a comprehensive supplement for metabolic and gut health. **Beyond Blood Sugar: A Holistic Health Boost** Feiolix’s benefits extend far beyond blood sugar control. Our research suggests that it may also: - Help reduce triglycerides and cholesterol levels - Increase insulin secretion from pancreatic cells - Enhance glucose absorption by muscle cells - Reduce inflammation - Increase feelings of fullness after meals ### **The Bottom Line and What this Means for you** If you’re looking for a natural way to support your weight loss efforts, Feiolix offers a promising solution. By harnessing the power of abscisic acid and supporting your gut microbiome, it may help you achieve your weight loss goals without the need for synthetic medications. Remember, while Feiolix shows great potential, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen. #### **References:** 1. Not stuffed to the brim, but simply comfortable and content. That may sound simple, but satiety is an incredibly complex sensation, and can be difficult for some people to experience. **We can think of satiety as having three key components, which work together in a tightly regulated feedback loop:** - The physical sensation of fullness, - hormonal signaling of nutrient adequacy, and - sufficient detection and interpretation of these physical and chemical signals in the brain. In the case of the inflammatory condition known as [metabolic syndrome](https://feiolix.com/what-is-metabolic-health/), the balance across these complex feedback loops is lost… but can be restored with a little help. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/satiety.jpeg) Until recently, satiety was almost exclusively thought of as a physical sensation. Countless products have been developed to increase the sensation of fullness or mimic tastes and textures that we crave without increasing calories. Enter non-digestible bulking fibres, non-caloric sweeteners, and emulsifiers. However, it’s become increasingly clear that the physical aspect of satiety is only one piece of the puzzle, albeit an important piece. Critically, some of the products developed to mimic flavors and textures and bulk, don’t necessarily register as *satiating* in our bodies. Our intestines are smarter than we give them credit for and not so easily tricked. Natural fibres, omega-3 fats, and the amino acid glutamate are the primary nutrients detected by chemosensory receptors in the gut, which convert extracellular signals to intracellular responses. Adequate concentrations of nutrients trigger the release of hormones and satiety signals to the vagus nerve and on to the brain, along the gut-brain-axis (Burman 2021). The activity of chemosensory receptors can be changed with other molecules present in the diet or produced by microbes residing in the gut. For instance, the short chain fatty acid propionate, which is produced by several probiotic species of bacteria utilizing dietary fibre from plants, acts on chemosensory receptors and increases the satiety signals sent to the brain. ### **GLP-1 – A Potent Signaling Hormone of Satiety** Signals from the chemosensory receptors aren’t the only hunger and satiety signals moving upwards to the brain; hormones and peptides also get in on the action. Leptin, Ghrelin, Peptide YY (PYY), Cholecystokinin (CCK), Glucagon Like Peptide 1( GLP-1), and Insulin are the major players, but there are also minor players that collectively have a large impact across the enteroendocrine and endocrine systems. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/A-Potent-Signaling-Hormone-of-Satiety.jpeg) ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/GLP-1-–-A-Potent-Signaling-Hormone-of-Satiety.jpeg) GLP-1 is one of the most potent signaling hormones of satiety and has anti-inflammatory action throughout the body, which makes it one of the most promising targets for treating systemic metabolic disease. GLP-1 has three major benefits: - Promotes satiety, - promotes sugar utilization (reducing blood sugar levels), and - reduces inflammation that is mediated by NFκB, as is characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome (Brierley 2021). GLP-1 production can be increased by consuming maté, and fruits containing high concentrations of abscisic acid, such as feijoa and figs. ### **Neuroinflammation – A Possible Cause of Metabolic Syndrome** Getting nutrients right, hosting a thriving gut microbiome, and supporting hormone production and reception are key to achieving satiety. But the experience of satiety as we perceive it is actually occurring in the brain. Just like any other tissue in the body, the brain and central nervous system can become inflamed. Acute inflammation in the brain as an immune response to pathogenic infections (encephalitis) can be life threatening. But sub-acute and chronic inflammation of specific regions of the brain (neuroinflammation) is more common, and while not necessarily life threatening, certainly impacts quality of life and is a predictable consequence of and contributing factor to metabolic syndrome (Purkayastha 2013). The hypothalamus is the primary region of the brain that acts as the master regulator of energy balance, metabolism, and metabolic syndrome (Myers 2012). Many neurons from the vagus nerve connect directly into the brainstem and the hypothalamus, conveying signals of satiety from the gut. Crucially, many hormones are able to cross the blood brain barrier and act directly on neurons. Insulin is one such hormone that is transported across the blood brain barrier and acts directly on the hypothalamus (Hampl 2015). A prominent feature of neuroinflammation is insulin resistance in the hypothalamus. Knowing these mechanisms opens up possibilities to address the problem by re-establishing insulin sensitivity. Luckily, inflammation of the central nervous system responds to specific anti-inflammatory phytochemicals and phytohormones that can be consumed in the diet. Many plant bioactive compounds inhibit the translocation of pro-inflammatory NFκB and subsequent production of inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species, thus reducing neuroinflammation as well as inflammation of many tissues throughout the body and re-establishing insulin sensitivity. Recently it’s been shown that abscisic acid is an insulin sensitizer and reduces neuroinflammation while rescuing the expression of insulin receptor substrate that was otherwise impaired by consumption of a high fat diet (Ribes Navarro 2019). Proper insulin signaling in the brain leads to increased satiety (Hallschmid 2012). **Feiolix Promotes GLP-1 and Increases Insulin Sensitivity** It’s clear that achieving satiety is more than just changing how much food we eat. By eating fruits such as feijoas that are high in anti-inflammatory, GLP-1 promoting, and insulin sensitizing phytohormones, as well as propionate promoting dietary fibre, we can support satiety in our brains and bodies. ### **References** Brierley, D.I., Holt, M.K., Singh, A. *et al.* Central and peripheral GLP-1 systems independently suppress eating. *Nat Metab* **3,** 258–273 (2021). https://doi.org/10.1038/s42255-021-00344-4 Burman, A., & Kaji, I. This figure rises to as many as 34% of all adults in some countries. Approximately 1 in 3 adults are prediabetic, and many adults are undiagnosed. Historically, T2DM has been considered a disease that increases with age, but more and more children, teens, and young adults are now being diagnosed with both prediabetes and T2DM. Prediabetes and T2DM are characterized by impaired glucose tolerance and decreased insulin sensitivity. This means that after eating, blood sugar levels increase to above what the body can safely tolerate before pancreatic β cells in the islets of Langerhans respond by secreting insulin. Additionally, in Type II diabetics, this insulin is not as effective at prompting glucose absorption from the blood stream as it is in non-diabetics. This is known as insulin resistance. This cycle of chronic elevated blood glucose leads to nerve damage in the eyes and peripheral limbs, kidney damage, increased risk of stroke and heart attack, and can be part of more widespread imbalanced hormone feedback loops with systemic effects. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/stimulation-of-insulin-feiolix-ft.jpeg) (adapted from https://bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/ (Q&A: insulin secretion and type 2 diabetes: why do β-cells fail?)) ***Figure: sugar->blood glucose->detection by pancreatic islet of Langerhans β cells-> stimulation of insulin secretion-> absorption of glucose by skeletal muscle from blood*** An oral glucose tolerance test and haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) are used to diagnose prediabetes and T2DM. Blood sugar levels between 140 and 199, and/or an HbA1C level of 5.7% – 6.4% are considered prediabetic and patients are often advised to make diet and lifestyle changes to prevent further disease progression into T2DM. When blood sugar levels are above 200, and HbA1C levels are above 6.4% a patient is considered to have T2DM. Treatment often includes pharmaceuticals, such as metformin which increases insulin sensitivity, synthetic insulin administration, or pharmaceuticals that stimulate insulin release. While effective, these treatment regimens frequently cause side effects and negatively impact daily life. Recommended dietary changes are intended to reduce the glycemic index of foods consumed by removing simple sugars and highly processed carbohydrates in favor of complex carbohydrates. The more complex a carbohydrate is, the longer it takes to be broken down by amylase enzymes in the body, leading to a lower and slower post-prandial (after eating) blood-glucose peak, and the lower glycemic index it is considered to have. While these dietary changes are crucial to prevent and reverse the progression of T2DM, there are additional dietary modifications that can actively target and support blood glucose homeostasis. #### Top 10 swaps from high glycemic to lower glycemic index foods **High GI foods** **Moderate and Low GI alternatives** Rice milk 86 ± 7 Soy milk 34 ± 4 Cornflakes 81 ± 6 Rolled oats 55 ± 2 White potato mash 78 ± 4 Sweet potato mash 63 ± 6 White wheat bread 75 ± 2 Rye pumpernickel bread 43 ± 2 White rice 73 ± 4 Barley 28 ± 2 Boiled taro 53 ± 2 Boiled carrots 39 ± 4 Banana 51 ± 3 Apple 36 ± 2 Watermelon 76 ± 4 Orange 43 ± 3 Ice cream 51 ± 3 Yogurt (Greek) 11 ± 2 Table sugar 65 ± 0 Stevia 0 These recommendations are based on the glucose-stimulated insulin-secretion pathway, in which glucose in the blood is detected and absorbed by β-cells of the islets of Langerhans, which synthesize and release insulin. Simple glucose-stimulated insulin-secretion is a primary pathway and is well understood, but fatty acids, amino acids, hormones, and various bioactives and pharmaceuticals also influence insulin release. While modulating blood glucose levels by reducing the amount and speed at which glucose enters the bloodstream is an important and effective modification, this pathway can also be used to stimulate insulin secretion at lower levels of blood glucose. Incretin hormones are intestinal hormones which enhance the secretion of insulin. The most active and understood of these incretins are glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide. Pharmaceutical GLP-1 receptor agonists (mimicking GLP-1) and GLP-1 degradation prohibitors (prolonging the life of GLP-1) have been used since 2005 to treat T2DM by stimulating insulin release at lower blood glucose levels. GLP-1 receptor agonists only support gene transcription of insulin in the presence of blood glucose, so there is no risk of hypoglycemia. However, there are also natural dietary components that act as a GLP-1 receptor agonists. The most promising and well understood compound that behaves in this way is abscisic acid (ABA). Another class of food derived compounds that stimulate insulin secretion are urolithins– microbially transformed antioxidants, ellagitannins. ABA is well known as a plant stress hormone involved in fruit ripening and the separation of fruit from stem. The highest concentrations of ABA have been documented in New Zealand feijoa fruits, followed by avocados, citrus, soybeans, figs, bilberries, maize, apricots, apples, and tomatoes. ABA is also produced and released by human pancreatic β-cells, granulocytes and monocytes at very low levels, meaning that this chemical pathway exists in both plants and animals. We humans have receptors (LANCL2) that respond to ABA. #### Top 10 food sources of ABA **Foodstuff** **ABA level (mg/kg)** New Zealand Feijoas 4.29 Avocados 2.0 Citrus 1.25 Soybean 0.79 Fig 0.72 Bilberry 0.4 Maize 0.33 Apricot 0.32 Apple 0.30 Tomato 0.20 Human LANCL2 (lanthionine synthetase C-like 2 proteins) receptors are expressed across innate immune cells, stem cells, β-cells in the pancreas, and muscle cells. In the β-cells in the pancreas (the insulin-secreting cells), ABA binding to the LANCL2 receptors upregulates glucose transporters in skeletal muscle, thereby decreasing blood glucose and increasing muscle glycogen stores for immediate utilization as energy. In addition, ABA binding to the LANCL2 receptors starts a molecular cascade and positive feedback loop that enhances and extends the glucose–induced secretion of insulin. Similarly, consuming foods high in a subclass of ellagitannins called catechins (green tea, apples, and feijoas) leads to the production of urolithins by the gut microbiota. Urolithins bind to an L-type calcium channel on the B cells of the pancreas, leading to an influx of calcium into the cell. This depolarization triggers the secretion of insulin when lower levels of glucose are present. This means that the consumption of foods high in ABA and ellagitannins supports insulin secretion. Support of insulin secretion is crucial for T2DM and prediabetes patients on reduced glycemic diets because these individuals are insulin-insensitive but now must respond to lower peaks of blood glucose which are triggering a lower insulin response than what they are accustomed to. By supporting insulin secretion with ABA and ellagitannins, their response can remain within the normal range. This is why a combination of reduced blood glucose and improved insulin secretion together support better blood glucose management. **Categories:** Insulin --- ### [Ellagitannins and Urolithins](https://feiolix.com/ellagitannins-and-urolithins/) **Published:** April 22, 2022 **Author:** anagenix **Content:** # Ellagitannins and Urolithins ## Email Newsletter Keep up with the latest news, articles and stories from Feiolix by signing up for our monthly email newsletter. Ellagitannins are the largest group of tannins and are easily hydrolysed into ellagic acid, either in the plant or in the stomach once consumed. The exact function of tannins in plants is unknown, but ecologists think that tannins may be a defense mechanism, effectively deterring some herbivores that might be detrimental to the plant. Another theory is that tannins act as signalling molecules between plants and environments (usually between roots and soils), and just happen to accumulate in the edible parts of the plant. #### **What are** ellagitannins? Ellagitannins are found in specific fruits and nuts and have recently been found to protect against hormone-dependent cancers (e.g. breast and prostate cancer), cardiovascular diseases, and inflammatory metabolic diseases (e.g. obesity, type 2 diabetes). Previously ellagitannins were considered anti-nutrients (substances that block the absorption of nutrients) and largely ignored in nutrition. As our understanding of bioactivity in foods and our own gut microbiomes has evolved, we have come to realize that humans have likely evolved alongside ellagitannins, seeking them for their flavour and perhaps unknowingly relying on them for their functional health support. More than 1000 distinct ellagitannins have been identified in nature but only ~12 of these have received attention as health-promoting components of foods. Berries (*Rubus*) were the first foods to be noted for their particularly high concentrations of ellagitannins, followed by nuts (walnuts, pecans, and chestnuts), pomegranates, guava, and, most recently, members of the *Myrtaceae* family such as Jabuticaba and Feijoa. It is common for ellagitannins to accumulate in the skins or seeds relative to the flesh, and total concentrations may differ from fruit to fruit and throughout the season. Ellagitannins may decrease in relative concentrations as fruits develop, whereas other antioxidant compounds such as anthocyanins, increase sharply at ripening, particularly in skins. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Ellagitannins-and-Urolithins-What-are-ellagitannins-3.jpeg) #### What happens when we consume ellagitannins? Once consumed, ellagitannins that have been released from plant cells are hydrolysed by stomach acids into free ellagic acid. Both ellagitannins and ellagic acid are generally poorly absorbed, which means the majority of them travel onto the intestines. Ultimately, they are metabolized by specific species of the gut microbiome into urolithins. Urolithins are incorporated into circulation between the gut and the liver (enterohepatic circulation), eventually becoming available to act as hormone analogs in the body. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Ellagitannins-and-Urolithins-What-happens-when-we-consume-ellagitannins-e1627954574681.jpeg) (García-Villalba, R., Beltrán, D., Espín, J. Interestingly, the specific combination of microbes in each person’s microbiome (their enterotype) determines which urolithins are produced and therefore which specific benefits the consumer might experience. The unique health benefits of each individual urolithin structure are still being studied, however, It has been found that urolithin A reduces inflammation in the brain, adipose tissue, heart, and liver, and increases mitochondrial function and thermogenesis, which can delay or prevent the onset of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and type 2 diabetes. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Ellagitannins-and-Urolithins-What-are-urolithins-and-how-do-they-benefit-our-health.png) (Cortés-Martín, A., García-Villalba, R., González-Sarrías, A., Romo-Vaquero, M., Loria-Kohen, V., Ramírez-de-Molina, A., … & Espín, J. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Clearly, there are many aspects contributing to our overall health. #### One of these aspects is our metabolic health. Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes that are continuously happening within our bodies in order to sustain us, which fall into two broad categories: - **Catabolism** – the process of converting food into energy by breaking down complex structures into smaller components, thus releasing energy - **Anabolism** – the process of capturing that energy and using those smaller components to build up and regenerate our own human structures When people think of metabolism and metabolic health, weight is often the first thing to come to mind. However metabolic health is more complex than just weight and encompasses the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Whilst there is no standard definition for “metabolic health”, researchers from the University of North Carolina, USA1, used optimal levels of the five biological variables traditionally associated with cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome risk to define metabolic health and determine its prevalence. **These variables are:** - Waist circumference - Blood pressure - Blood glucose (including HbA1c) - Blood triglycerides - Cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-C) The researchers determined that metabolically healthy people have optimal levels of all five of these variables. Interestingly, and concerningly, the researchers found that < 20% of American adults were metabolically healthy. This decreased to just 12.2% when the most restrictive cutoff points were used. The researchers noted that an elevated waist circumference alone is only weakly associated with cardiovascular disease risk, but even when this variable was excluded, only one-third of ideal weight (as defined by BMI) adults were considered metabolically healthy. This highlights the need to look beyond the scales when determining metabolic health. Related to “metabolic health” is “metabolic syndrome”. Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when a person presents with suboptimal levels of 3 out of the 5 biological variables associated with cardiovascular disease risk. It is estimated that around 22–34% of the adult population2,3 has metabolic syndrome and is therefore at risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes or having a stroke. **The risk factors for developing metabolic syndrome include central obesity (i.e. excess fat around the middle), insulin resistance, age, inactivity/sedentary lifestyle and genetics.** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Complications_of_metabolic_syndrome_Chart.jpeg) ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Complications_of_metabolic_syndrome_Small.jpeg) *Figure 1: Complications/health outcomes that can arise as a result of having metabolic syndrome/poor metabolic health* Closely related to metabolic syndrome and with overlapping aspects is prediabetes. People with prediabetes have elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels, but not high enough to be classed as diabetes (prediabetes: fasting blood glucose of 100 – 125 mg/dL; diabetes: fasting blood glucose of > 125 mg/dL). Prediabetics are often also overweight with central belly fat and have high blood pressure. Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome have also been referred to as inflammatory syndromes and are characterised by hormone imbalance on a biochemical level. Catabolic hormones include adrenaline, cortisol, glucagon, and cytokines, which are predominantly associated with stress and inflammation. Anabolic hormones include insulin, growth hormone, testosterone, and estrogen, which are primarily reproductive. Insulin and glucagon work in concert to maintain blood glucose levels by coordinating the absorption of glucose into tissue such as muscles. Crucially, all of these hormones work together and influence each other in feedback loops to maintain homeostasis. An imbalance in any of these hormones has follow-on effects throughout the system, contributing to excessive weight gain or loss. Through feedback loops, even catabolic reactions using energy such as chronic inflammation lead to increased anabolism and subsequent weight gain. While this complexity can make metabolic syndrome and prediabetes difficult to resolve, it also means that there are multiple entry points through which to address underlying problems and improve metabolic health. #### To improve your metabolic health and reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and associated diseases, you should: 1. **Eat a healthy diet.** Consume a range of high-fibre foods, fruits and vegetables, lean meats and plant proteins, and reduce/avoid your intake of processed foods, sugary foods (particularly those with added sugar) and foods with high levels of saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. 2. **Obtain/maintain a healthy weight.** If you are overweight or obese, a loss of around 5-10% can halve your risk of developing metabolic syndrome/diabetes by helping to reduce blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. 3. **Partake in regular physical activity.** This will help to improve blood pressure and cholesterol. Moderately strenuous exercise that makes you breathe harder is best. Aim for around 30 minutes a day / 150 minutes a week. 4. **Don’t smoke.** Smoking can increase blood pressure and insulin resistance. It can also cause inflammation in the body. 5. **Reduce/manage stress.** Chronic stress has been linked to an increased risk of metabolic disease, including obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. 6. **Get regular check-ups.** Early diagnosis of any issues means you can get onto making any required changes sooner and reduce long-term health complications. #### **References:** 1. But there’s a whole cast and crew of fats and lipid molecules around those dastardly sugar molecules that play major roles in health dramas as well. The relevance of fat metabolism to metabolic health isn’t just in body size and shape, although that can be important as well if visceral fat accumulates around vital organs in the abdomen. Abnormalities in lipid metabolism are clearly identified in the 3/5 of the diagnostic criteria for Metabolic Syndrome relating to blood triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. This overlaps with the estimated 72-85% of T2DM patients who also have diabetic dyslipidaemia, which is associated with substantially increased risk for cardiovascular disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Cholesterol_levels2_900x506.jpg) It’s been suggested that the dislipidaemia seen in diabetics and metabolic syndrome is due to lifestyle factors such as a high fat diet, but there’s much more going on in terms of how fats are metabolised and the quality and storage of the molecules resulting from that metabolism. The common connection here between dislipidaemia, diabetes and metabolic syndrome is insulin which is the primary director of energy utilisation and metabolism: supporting insulin sensitivity can pull both blood sugar and blood lipids back into balance. **Insulin has two primary effects on lipid metabolism:** 1. Insulin promotes the conversion of **free fatty acids** to **lipoproteins** in the liver when the liver is saturated with **glycogen**. These lipoproteins are then exported back into the blood stream for further utilisation or accumulation. 2. Insulin inhibits the breakdown of **triglycerides** into free fatty acids in **adipose tissue** by inhibiting lipase, leading to accumulation of fat. But this isn’t just a one-way street, free fatty acids in the blood also cause **insulin resistance** in muscle cells by inhibiting insulin-stimulated glucose absorption and glycogen synthesis. Insulin resistance means that cells don’t absorb glucose from the blood stream quickly enough when insulin is released from the pancreas. This leaves both glucose and insulin circulating in the blood which can be dangerous for nerves and the kidneys. Circulating glucose and free fatty acids eventually arrive at the liver. When the liver is presented with excessive fatty acids and insulin, dangerous and atherosclerotic **LDL** and **VLDL** **cholesterols** are produced. This process is controlled by **ApoB**, often considered the gate keeper to danger. Diets high in sugar and fat promote ApoB production. As more ApoB is produced, more free fatty acids are converted into LDL and VLDL, which tend to stick to the inside walls of arteries, leading to atherosclerosis. HDL is termed the good cholesterol because it’s atheroprotective and functions in reverse cholesterol transport: the movement of cholesterol away from peripheral cells and arteries to the liver from catabolism and excretion. HDL contains a lipoprotein called **ApoA-1** which is at the core of this action, making it the gatekeeper to health. Doctors are increasingly looking at the ratio of Apo-B/ApoA-1 to measure a patient’s risk of heart attack. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Cholesterol_Cycle_900x506.gif) It’s important to note that everyone has a specific and unique metabolic phenotype, especially when it comes to lipid metabolism. Some people carry genes to produce more ApoB, which increases their risk for cardiovascular disease, whereas other people can consume the same diet and lead a similar lifestyle with no ill-effects on their metabolic health. It is still important to maintain insulin sensitivity, and there are many changes we can make to reduce insulin resistance. Things we can do to reduce insulin resistance and improve insulin sensitivity: - **Nutrition**: managing macronutrient ratios and energy consumption is the first line of defence against insulin resistance. - **Sleep**: getting at least 7 hours of high-quality sleep with multiple REM cycles is critical for maintaining insulin sensitivity. Sleep deprivation lasting more than 24 hours seems to impair pancreatic B cell function. - **Exercise**: both cardio and resistance exercise (anaerobic and aerobic) help promote glucose absorption and utilisation in the short term. Over the long term, expression of GLUT4 transporters for the uptake of glucose into cells is also increased, improving insulin sensitivity even on off days. - **Plant bioactives**: Some secondary metabolites and hormones produced in plants have potent insulin sensitising actions. Feiolix contains multiple bioactives that [improve insulin sensitivity](https://feiolix.com/stimulation-of-insulin/) and dislipidaemia associated with metabolic syndrome. Abscisic acid and polyphenols found in Feiolix both promote the browning of white fat, meaning the addition of energy utilising mitochondria to otherwise low energy utilising white adipose cells. Abscisic acid and polyphenols also promote energy usage (thermogenesis) in brown adipose tissue, meaning more free fatty acids and glucose is absorbed and burned, particularly right after a meal. Abscisic acid also stimulates glucose absorption and reduces the need for higher levels of insulin to be secreted from the pancreas. This in turn reduces the production of dangerous LDL and VLDL molecules in the liver. Polyphenols have been found to increase the reverse transport of cholesterol by HDL and ApoA-1, which helps to reduce LDL and VLDL and protect patients from CVD and more serious events. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating a polyphenol rich diet, and supplementing diet with potent bioactive compounds such as those found in Feiolix, it’s possible to improve your blood lipid profile along with overall metabolic health. #### Glossary **Free fatty acids: l**ipid species released from the adipose tissue and several cell types upon lipolysis. Apart from their classical roles in energy supply or as structural components, FFAs are active players in many biological processes. **Triglycerides:** are lipids derived from glycerol and three fatty acids. **Glycogen**: is a multi-branched polysaccharide of glucose that stores energy. **Lipoproteins:** are structures containing both protein and fat that carry cholesterol through the bloodstream. **Cholesterol**: is a sterol, which is a type of lipid. Cholesterols are crucial structural and functional components of healthy cells, but too much cholesterol can increase risk of heart disease. **Chylomicrons**: Large triglyceride rich particles made by the intestine to transport dietary triglcyerides and cholesterol to peripheral tissues and the liver. The size of the chylomicron depends on the amount of fat ingested, but each chylomicron contain several apolipoproteins, as well as a core structural Apo B-48 molecule. **Chylomicron remnants:** As peripheral tissues remove triglycerides from chylomicrons, smaller chylomicron remnants are formed, which are pro-atherogenic. **HDL** High density lipoprotein: HDL, or “good” cholesterol, absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver. The liver then flushes it from the body. High levels of HDL cholesterol can lower your risk for heart disease and stroke (*anti-atherogenic*). **IDL**: Intermediate density lipoproteins, which are proatherogenic, result from the removal of triglycerides from VLDL **LDL** small dense low density lipoprotein cholesterol LDL, sometimes called “bad” cholesterol, makes up most of your body’s cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol raise your risk for heart disease and stroke (*pro-atherogenic*). LDL particles exist in multiple subclasses which vary by size, density, and lipid content. **VLDL** very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol are large and contain the highest amount of triglycerides. High levels of VLDL can contribute to atherosclerosis, which can make a person more susceptible to heart disease or stroke. Eating more carbohydrates, or sugars, than you burn can lead to excessive amounts of triglycerides and high levels of VLDL in your blood. **ApoB-100**: Apolipoprotein B-100 is a type of VLDL and allows LDLs to attach to specific receptors on the surface of cells, particularly in the liver. Once attached, the receptors transport LDLs into the cell, where they are broken down to release cholesterol. Elevated levels of apo B correspond to elevated levels of LDL-C and to non-HDL-C and are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Elevations may be due to a high-fat diet and/or decreased clearing of LDL from the blood. **ApoA-1**: Apolipoprotein A1 is a major component of HDL particles. ApoA-1 enables efflux of fat molecules from within peripheral cells (arteries and macrophages) for transport to the liver for catabolism and excretion. **White adipose tissue** collects, stores and then releases lipids. White adipose tissue is increasingly recognised an endocrine organ, as it also releases leptin (a satiety hormone), inflammatory cytokines, and molecules that participate in lipid metabolism vascular haemostasis (bleeding). **Brown adipose tissue** is an energy utiliser and essential in generating heat. Brown **adipose tissue contains more mitochondria than white adipose tissue.** #### **References:** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Protein-Chemistry.jpg) Advances Protein Chemistry 45:303, 1994 Athyros, V.G., Doumas, M., Imprialos, K.P. et al. This remarkable hormone could be the key to understanding how our bodies regulate appetite and weight, and how we can work with our natural systems to achieve our health goals. **What is GLP-1?** Glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, is a fascinating hormone produced naturally in your body. It’s part of a complex system that helps regulate appetite, metabolism, and blood sugar levels. GLP-1 is primarily released by specialised cells in your intestines, known as L cells, in response to food intake. When you eat, GLP-1 acts as a powerful messenger, signalling to various parts of your body that it’s time to process nutrients. This hormone is part of a larger family called incretins, which play crucial roles in metabolic regulation. **The Intricate World of Metabolism** Before we delve deeper into GLP-1’s role, let’s take a moment to understand metabolism. Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes that occur within your body to maintain life. These processes include: 1. Breaking down food into energy (catabolism) 2. Using that energy to build and repair tissues (anabolism) 3. Eliminating waste products Your metabolic rate – the speed at which these processes occur – is influenced by various factors, including age, gender, muscle mass, and hormones like GLP-1. **GLP-1 and Metabolism: A Powerful Partnership** GLP-1 is often called an “incretin” hormone because it helps increase insulin production when blood sugar levels rise after a meal. This insulin boost helps your cells absorb glucose more efficiently, keeping your blood sugar in check. But that’s not all – GLP-1 also slows down the rate at which food leaves your stomach, a process known as gastric emptying. Here’s a closer look at how GLP-1 impacts your metabolism: 1. **Blood Sugar Regulation**: GLP-1 stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells, but only when blood glucose levels are high. This glucose-dependent action helps prevent dangerous drops in blood sugar. 2. **Glucagon Suppression**: GLP-1 inhibits the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. This dual action on insulin and glucagon helps maintain stable blood glucose levels. 3. **Gastric Motility**: By slowing down gastric emptying, GLP-1 helps spread out the absorption of nutrients, preventing rapid spikes in blood sugar. 4. **Pancreatic Health**: Some studies suggest that GLP-1 may promote the growth and survival of pancreatic beta cells, potentially improving long-term metabolic health. **The Weight Management Connection** Now, let’s explore how GLP-1’s metabolic effects translate to weight management: 1. **Appetite Control**: GLP-1 acts on the hypothalamus, the brain’s hunger control centre, sending signals that you’re satisfied. This can lead to reduced overall food intake and fewer cravings. 2. **Slowed Digestion**: By delaying gastric emptying, GLP-1 can help you feel full with smaller portions. This prolonged feeling of satiety can naturally reduce calorie intake without feelings of deprivation. 3. **Metabolic Boost**: Some research suggests GLP-1 may increase energy expenditure, helping you burn more calories throughout the day. While more studies are needed, this could be an exciting avenue for future weight management strategies. 4. **Blood Sugar Balance**: By improving insulin sensitivity and preventing blood sugar spikes and crashes, GLP-1 can help stabilise energy levels and reduce the cravings often associated with blood sugar fluctuations. 5. **Fat Metabolism**: Emerging research indicates that GLP-1 might influence how the body processes and stores fat, potentially favouring the use of fat for energy rather than storage. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/33232.jpg "Fitness Body Builder Challenge") **Natural Sources of GLP-1 Modulators** Whilst GLP-1-based medications (Ozempic and Wegozy) have gained attention for weight loss, there are natural sources that can support your body’s GLP-1 function: 1. **Fibre-Rich Foods**: Foods high in fibre can stimulate GLP-1 release. **Whole grains**, **legumes**, and **vegetables** are excellent sources. 2. **Protein-Rich Foods**: **Eggs**, **nuts**, and **lean meats** can help increase GLP-1 levels. 3. **Healthy Fats**: **Olive oil** and **avocados** contain monounsaturated fats that may support GLP-1 function. 4. **Fermented Foods**: **Probiotics in yoghurt and kefir** may indirectly support GLP-1 production. 5. **Feijoa/Feiolix**: This unique fruit, popular in New Zealand and Australia contains high levels of **abscisic acid**. Abscisic acid has been shown to enhance insulin secretion and support glucose absorption, stimulating release GLP-1. Remember, sustainable weight management is about more than just one hormone. It’s a complex interplay of nutrition, activity, sleep, and overall well-being. By incorporating these natural GLP-1 supporters into a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, you can work with your body’s innate wisdom to achieve sustainable health and wellness.Stay tuned for more insights into how nature’s bounty can support your journey to optimal health and vitality! #### **References:** Hira T, Trakooncharoenvit A, Taguchi H, Hara H. While these medications mimic the effects of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone in your body, it’s important to understand that they are not identical to the hormone itself. Ozempic and similar drugs are synthetic compounds designed to activate GLP-1 receptors more potently and for a longer duration than the natural hormone. **How GLP-1 Medications Promote Weight Loss** These medications work through multiple mechanisms to promote weight loss: 1. They slow down digestion, helping you feel full for longer periods. 2. They act on brain regions controlling hunger, effectively reducing appetite. 3. By regulating blood sugar levels, they can also help curb cravings. These combined effects lead to reduced calorie intake and subsequent weight loss. **Effectiveness and Weight Loss Expectations** The effectiveness of GLP-1 medications for weight loss has been well-documented, with many individuals losing between 5-15% of their body weight. This weight loss typically occurs gradually over several months, with maximum results often seen around the one-year mark. However, it’s crucial to note that individual results can vary significantly. **Beyond Diabetes: GLP-1 for Non-Diabetic Weight Loss** While originally developed for type 2 diabetes management, some GLP-1 medications have now been approved for weight loss in non-diabetic individuals. For instance, Wegovy, a higher dose formulation of semaglutide, is specifically approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbidity. **Choosing the Right GLP-1 Medication** When it comes to choosing a GLP-1 medication for weight loss, recent studies have shown impressive results with semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro). However, the most suitable option should always be determined by a healthcare professional based on individual health needs and goals. **Potential Side Effects and Risks** It’s important to be aware that while these medications can be highly effective, they are not without potential side effects. Common issues include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, headache, and fatigue. More serious, albeit rare, side effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and changes in heart rate. Always discuss these risks with your healthcare provider before starting treatment. **Dosage and Administration** GLP-1 medications for weight loss typically start at a low dose and gradually increase over time to minimize side effects. For example, Wegovy begins at 0.25 mg once weekly for the first month, then increases monthly until reaching the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg weekly. It’s crucial to follow your doctor’s prescribed dosage instructions carefully. **Consulting with Healthcare Professionals** If you’re considering a GLP-1 medication or supplement, it’s crucial to discuss it with your healthcare provider first. They can help you weigh the potential risks and benefits, and may suggest more effective, evidence-based alternatives for weight management. **Conclusion: A Holistic Approach to Weight Management** While GLP-1 medications have proven to be effective for weight loss, there’s growing interest in natural alternatives that may support GLP-1 pathways. For those transitioning off GLP-1 medications or seeking more natural options, certain dietary supplements and lifestyle changes may offer promising alternatives. Several natural compounds have shown potential in activating GLP-1 pathways or supporting the body’s own GLP-1 production: 1. Berberine: Some studies suggest it may increase GLP-1 secretion and improve insulin sensitivity. 2. Green tea extract: Contains compounds that may stimulate GLP-1 release. 3. Prebiotics and probiotics: Certain strains have been associated with increased GLP-1 levels. 4. High-fibre foods: Foods rich in fibre, like broccoli, apples, and beans, can help stimulate GLP-1 production. 5. Protein-rich foods: Eggs, nuts, and lean meats may help increase GLP-1 levels. 6. Feijoa: This fruit is particularly high in abscisic acid, which has been shown to activate the GLP-1 pathway. Research indicates that abscisic acid can stimulate GLP-1 secretion from intestinal L-cells and increase plasma GLP-1 levels. As a natural source of this GLP-1 enhancer, feijoa could be a valuable addition to a diet aimed at supporting metabolic health. These natural alternatives, when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, may help support weight management efforts for those transitioning off GLP-1 medications or looking for non-prescription options. They could potentially help maintain some of the benefits experienced with GLP-1 medications, such as improved appetite control and blood sugar regulation. However, it’s important to note that while these natural options show promise, their effects are generally milder than prescription GLP-1 agonists. They should be viewed as part of a holistic approach to weight management rather than a direct replacement for medications. As always, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, especially when transitioning from prescription medications. They can provide personalized advice, taking into account your individual health needs and goals. Remember, sustainable weight management is a journey that often involves a combination of strategies. By incorporating natural GLP-1 supporters into a healthy lifestyle, you may be able to continue your progress and maintain the benefits you’ve achieved, even after discontinuing GLP-1 medications. #### **References:** Müller TD, et al. Here are some of the most serious risks associated with Ozempic use: 1. **Pancreatitis**: One of the most alarming potential side effects of Ozempic is acute pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, which can cause symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. A review published in the journal *Diabetes Care* found an increased risk of pancreatitis in patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic, although the absolute risk remains low. Nonetheless, people with a history of pancreatitis should use this medication with caution. 2. **Thyroid Cancer Risk**: There has been concern about a potential link between GLP-1 receptor agonists and the development of thyroid cancer. Animal studies have shown that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, can lead to the formation of thyroid tumours, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) . While these findings have not been conclusively observed in humans, the FDA has issued warnings about the potential risk. Individuals with a family history of thyroid cancer are advised to avoid Ozempic or discuss the risks with their healthcare provider. 3. **Gallbladder Disease**: Research has also shown that Ozempic can increase the likelihood of gallbladder-related issues, such as gallstones and gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis). In some cases, these conditions have required surgical intervention. A study published in *JAMA* found that individuals using GLP-1 receptor agonists had a higher incidence of gallbladder-related problems compared to those on placebo. 4. **Hypoglycemia**: Although Ozempic is primarily prescribed to manage blood sugar levels, in some cases, it can lead to hypoglycemia, or dangerously low blood sugar levels, particularly when used in combination with other antidiabetic medications like insulin. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, confusion, sweating, and in severe cases, seizures. 5. **Diabetic Retinopathy Complications**: There is evidence suggesting that rapid improvements in blood sugar levels due to drugs like Ozempic may exacerbate diabetic retinopathy in patients with pre-existing diabetes. This complication can lead to worsening vision or even blindness in severe cases. Given these risks, many individuals are seeking natural alternatives to Ozempic for weight management and metabolic health, especially those who are not diabetic but are using Ozempic off-label for weight loss. ## **The Rise of Natural Alternatives: Why They Matter** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/natural-glp-1.jpg) As concerns over the side effects of synthetic medications like Ozempic grow, there has been a surge in interest in natural alternatives that promote metabolic health in a safer and more holistic manner. These alternatives, typically derived from plants and natural compounds, offer a gentler approach to weight management by leveraging the body’s natural metabolic processes. **Benefits of Natural Alternatives** 1. **Fewer Side Effects**: Natural GLP-1 boosters typically come with fewer and less severe side effects compared to synthetic drugs. This makes them a safer option for those looking for long-term weight management solutions. 2. **Holistic Health**: Unlike medications that target a single issue, natural alternatives often provide a broad range of benefits, from improved gut health to better overall well-being. They promote harmony between various bodily systems, helping to manage weight without disrupting other aspects of health. 3. **Sustainability**: Many natural alternatives can be taken long-term without the need for medical supervision. This makes them suitable for individuals who are seeking a lifelong solution to maintaining a healthy weight. 4. **Affordability and Accessibility**: Natural products are often more affordable than prescription medications and don’t require medical oversight, making them more accessible to a broader range of individuals. ## **Natural GLP-1 Boosters: Alternatives to Ozempic** Many everyday foods can enhance the body’s GLP-1 production, promoting satiety and stable blood sugar levels. Below is a list of key foods that have been scientifically shown to boost GLP-1, each with unique benefits: ### 1. **High-Fiber Foods** ![High fibre foods](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/high-fibre.jpg) **Dietary fibre** plays a significant role in increasing GLP-1 levels, as it slows down digestion, which promotes satiety and stimulates GLP-1 secretion. - **Whole Grains**: Oats, barley, quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat are rich in soluble fibre. Soluble fibre forms a gel-like substance in the gut that slows digestion, stimulates GLP-1 release, and helps regulate blood sugar levels. - **Legumes**: Lentils, chickpeas, black beans, and kidney beans are excellent sources of fibre and protein. Their high fibre content promotes gut health, which in turn enhances GLP-1 secretion. - **Vegetables**: Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Brussels sprouts, along with broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, are high in fibre. Their consumption helps promote a healthy gut environment that supports GLP-1 release. ### 2. **Lean Proteins** ![Lean protein](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/main-leanproteinvsprotein.jpg) Protein-rich meals have been shown to increase GLP-1 secretion by slowing down digestion and enhancing feelings of fullness. - **Chicken Breast & Turkey**: These lean meats are high in protein and low in fat, which helps promote satiety and GLP-1 production without adding excess calories. - **Fish**: Salmon, mackerel, and tuna are high in omega-3 fatty acids and lean protein, both of which support healthy digestion and GLP-1 secretion. - **Eggs**: A great source of protein and healthy fats, eggs have been shown to stimulate GLP-1 release and help maintain stable blood sugar levels. ### 3. **Fruits Rich in Polyphenols** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/summer-drops-cherry-berries-wallpaper-preview.jpg) Certain fruits are rich in polyphenols, which have been found to increase GLP-1 secretion and support healthy metabolism. - **Apples**: Rich in fibre and polyphenols, apples help stimulate GLP-1 secretion and promote gut health. - **Berries**: Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols, which improve insulin sensitivity and stimulate GLP-1 release. - **Citrus Fruits**: Oranges, grapefruits, and lemons contain flavonoids that enhance GLP-1 secretion and improve metabolic health. ### 4. **Fermented Foods** ![Fermented Foods](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/fermented-foods222.jpg) Fermented foods promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which play a role in GLP-1 secretion. - **Yogurt & Kefir**: These probiotic-rich dairy products help maintain a healthy gut environment, which in turn supports the body’s natural GLP-1 production. - **Sauerkraut & Kimchi**: Fermented vegetables that contain probiotics, which aid digestion and improve the gut microbiome, boosting GLP-1 levels. ### 5. **Healthy Fats** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/healthy-fat.jpg) Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can enhance GLP-1 secretion by promoting satiety and reducing inflammation. - **Fatty Fish**: Salmon, mackerel, sardines, and herring are rich in omega-3s and support healthy digestion and GLP-1 release. - **Avocados**: High in fibre and healthy fats, avocados help regulate appetite and boost GLP-1 levels, which can aid in weight management. - **Olive Oil**: Rich in monounsaturated fats, olive oil has been shown to stimulate GLP-1 secretion and improve overall metabolic health. - **Nuts & Seeds**: Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds contain healthy fats and fibre that support satiety and GLP-1 secretion. ### 6. **Herbs and Spices** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/herbs.webp) Several herbs and spices have been shown to increase GLP-1 levels due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. - **Turmeric**: Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has been shown to boost GLP-1 levels and improve insulin sensitivity. - **Ginger**: This powerful anti-inflammatory spice stimulates GLP-1 secretion and supports digestion. - **Cinnamon**: Known for improving insulin sensitivity, cinnamon also enhances GLP-1 secretion, making it beneficial for blood sugar regulation. ### 7. **Beans and Pulses** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/beans.jpg) Beans and pulses are rich in both fibre and protein, making them excellent natural GLP-1 boosters. - **Black Beans**: High in fibre and protein, black beans help increase satiety and promote the secretion of GLP-1. - **Chickpeas**: A great source of fibre and plant-based protein, chickpeas help slow digestion and enhance GLP-1 levels. ### 8. **Feijoa (Rich in Abscisic Acid)** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Feijoas.jpg) This fruit, particularly in powder form, is rich in **abscisic acid (ABA)**, which helps increase native GLP-1 secretion. Feijoa is a natural source of ABA, which supports GLP-1 secretion and promotes satiety, making it effective for metabolic support and weight management. - ## **Feiolix®: A Natural GLP-1 Booster** One such natural alternative is **Feiolix®**, a product derived from the feijoa fruit, known for its high content of abscisic acid (ABA), a compound that naturally stimulates GLP-1 production in the body. Unlike Ozempic, which directly mimics GLP-1, Feiolix works by supporting the body’s innate ability to produce this important hormone. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/feilox.jpg) **How Feiolix® Works** Feiolix stimulates the release of GLP-1 through its dual mechanism: the presence of abscisic acid (ABA) and the promotion of gut bacteria that enhance GLP-1 secretion. This approach mirrors the body’s natural metabolic processes, supporting weight loss and improved glucose regulation without the need for synthetic drugs. **Abscisic Acid:** ![Abscisic acid (ABA)](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/A102.png) Abscisic acid (ABA) is a naturally occurring plant hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes in plants, such as seed dormancy, germination, and stress responses (especially during drought conditions). It helps plants adapt to environmental stresses by closing stomata (tiny openings on leaves) to reduce water loss and manage nutrient flow. In recent research, abscisic acid has also been studied for its potential health benefits in humans. It has been found to influence glucose metabolism by stimulating the secretion of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone that enhances insulin secretion, helps regulate blood sugar, and supports metabolic health. This makes it a key component in some natural metabolic boosters, including products like Feiolix, which is rich in ABA. **Benefits of Feiolix®** 1. **Natural Composition**: Feiolix is a natural, whole fruit powder standardized to contain more than 4 mg of abscisic acid (ABA) per 100 grams. This natural composition is ideal for individuals who prefer non-synthetic, plant-based supplements. 2. **Dual Mechanism of Action**: Feiolix stimulates GLP-1 secretion through ABA and supports gut bacteria that naturally boost GLP-1 levels. This differs from Ozempic, which directly mimics GLP-1 and activates its receptors. 3. **Broader Metabolic Benefits**: Feiolix offers more than just GLP-1 stimulation. It increases insulin secretion, enhances glucose absorption by skeletal muscle cells, and decreases inflammation, all of which contribute to improved metabolic health. 4. **Appetite Control and Thermogenesis**: Feiolix helps reduce weight gain by increasing feelings of fullness and boosting thermogenesis, helping the body burn more calories post-meal. 5. **Gut Health Support**: Feiolix contains dietary fibres that promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to better overall gut health. A healthy gut microbiome is closely linked to weight management and metabolic health. 6. **Long-Term Sustainability**: As a dietary supplement, Feiolix can be used for extended periods without the need for medical supervision. Its natural composition makes it suitable for long-term metabolic support. ### **Comparing Ozempic and Feiolix®: A Side-by-Side Analysis** --- **Aspect****Feiolix****Ozempic****Composition**Natural whole fruit powder (feijoa)Synthetic GLP-1 receptor agonist (semaglutide)**Administration**Daily powder or tablet formWeekly injection**Mechanism**Stimulates native GLP-1 secretionMimics GLP-1 to increase insulin secretion**Side Effects**Minimal, gut health supportGastrointestinal issues, nausea, vomiting**Cost**Affordable, no prescription requiredExpensive, requires a prescription**Sustainability**Long-term use without medical supervisionShort-term, requires medical supervision**Gut Health**Supports gut microbiomeNo direct gut health benefits## **Conclusion: Choosing the Right Path for Weight Management** Ozempic has proven to be an effective solution for managing weight and improving metabolic health, especially for individuals with type 2 diabetes. However, the severe side effects associated with its use cannot be ignored. For those looking for a safer, more natural approach to weight management, alternatives like Feiolix provide an effective solution that works in harmony with the body’s natural processes. By supporting gut health, promoting natural GLP-1 production, and offering a sustainable approach to weight loss, natural alternatives like Feiolix are gaining traction among those seeking a long-term, holistic solution to their weight management goals. #### **References:** Müller TD, et al. Feiolix® concentrates three major bioactive classes: ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/placeholder-104-300x297.png "placeholder-104") Abscisic Acid. Insulin Sensitivity & GLP-1 Modulation Abscisic acid (ABA) is a conserved signalling molecule found in both plants and humans. In human physiology, ABA: - Binds to LANCL2 receptors - Enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion - Stimulates peripheral glucose uptake - Promotes endogenous GLP-1 release - Increases mitochondrial gene expression - Activates brown adipose tissue - Enhances thermogenesis - ABA works in a glucose-dependent manner, supporting metabolic regulation without overstimulation. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/placeholder-104-300x297.png "placeholder-104") Ellagitannins > Urolithins. Inflammation Control & Mitochondrial Function Feijoa is naturally rich in pedunculagin, an ellagitannin converted by gut microbiota into bioactive urolithins. Urolithins: - Reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines - Improve insulin signalling pathways - Promote GLP-1 secretion through bitter taste receptors - Enhance mitochondrial efficiency - Promote browning of white adipose tissue - Support adipose tissue remodelling Chronic low-grade inflammation is a key driver of insulin resistance. Feiolix® targets this upstream mechanism. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/placeholder-104-300x297.png "placeholder-104") Xyloglucan Fibre Matrix. Glycaemic Modulation & Gut-Metabolic Axis Abscisic acid (ABA) is a conserved signalling molecule found in both plants and humans. Xyloglucans are specialised hemicellulose fibres that: - Slow glucose absorption - Reduce post-prandial spikes - Support bile acid metabolism - Improve triglyceride clearance - Increase production of propionate via fermentation Propionate is associated with: - Improved satiety signalling - Reduced caloric intake - Enhanced GLP-1 stimulation - This gut-metabolic interaction differentiates Feiolix® from isolated ABA ingredients. THE Feiolix® FACTS. GLP-1 & Blood sugar spikes. When you eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which enters your bloodstream and causes your blood sugar to rise. In response, your gut releases hormones like GLP-1 that tell the pancreas to release insulin, reduce glucagon, slow stomach emptying and signal to your brain that you’re getting full. In a healthy response, blood sugar rises moderately after a meal, GLP-1 and insulin help move glucose into muscles and other tissues, and your levels drift back toward baseline over 2–3 hours without a hard “crash.” When this system is overloaded by frequent, large spikes—think high-sugar or refined-carb meals—your pancreas has to work harder, insulin levels surge, and over time cells can become less responsive to insulin, a process known as insulin resistance. These sharp spikes and rapid drops also drive hunger, cravings, low energy, and long-term cardiometabolic risk, which is why moderating post-meal blood sugar and supporting robust GLP-1 signalling are central to modern metabolic health strategies. Feiolix® is a natural GLP-1 agonist that amplifies your body’s own GLP-1 signalling rather than acting as a single synthetic receptor agonist. Through its ABA, ellagitannin–urolithin and xyloglucan fibre matrix, Feiolix® promotes endogenous GLP-1 release from gut and pancreatic cells, supports GLP-1 receptor activation, and enhances downstream effects on insulin secretion, satiety signalling and thermogenesis. This multi-pathway GLP-1 support translates into more stable post-prandial glycaemic responses, reduced appetite, and improved metabolic efficiency without overstimulating glucose-independent pathways. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/DogMorph.gif "DogMorph") Feiolix® & BLOOD SUGAR SPIKES. Post-meal blood sugar spikes and rapid crashes are central drivers of insulin resistance, hunger, and long-term cardiometabolic risk. By slowing glucose absorption via its xyloglucan-rich fibre matrix, stimulating GLP-1 and PYY release through gut–microbiome interactions, and improving peripheral glucose uptake via ABA and urolithins, Feiolix® smooths the post-prandial glucose curve rather than simply lowering fasting glucose. In controlled CGM consumer studies, Feiolix® reduced 30 minute glucose peaks by up to ~35% at breakfast and up to ~50% with high-GI snacks, while extending sustained glucose stability for 21–47%, supporting steadier energy, reduced cravings and a lower glycaemic burden over time. ![](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27673%27%20height%3D%27806%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20673%20806%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27673%27%20height%3D%27806%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E) ![](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%27673%27%20height%3D%27806%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%20673%20806%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%27673%27%20height%3D%27806%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E) Multi-Pathway Mechanism of Action. Feiolix® operates across five coordinated pathways: 1\. Glucose-dependent insulin sensitisation 2\. Endogenous GLP-1 modulation 3\. Thermogenic activation 4\. Inflammatory reduction 5\. Gut-metabolic axis regulation This systems-level activity supports sustainable metabolic restoration throughout the body rather than a single-target intervention. Clinically, this is reflected in improvements in HbA1c, fasting glucose, lipids, blood pressure, visceral fat and satiety, aligning Feiolix® with current priorities in metabolic health and positioning it as a next-generation GLP-1 supportive ingredient for long-term metabolic balance. ABA sensitises GLUT4 to glucose in the blood stream and increases the amount of glucose absorbed from blood stream - ABA binds to LANCL2 and increases insulin secretion and ultimately absorption of glucose from the blood stream. - ABA triggers the secretion of GLP-1 - Inhibits NFkB which leads to less disruptive hunger signalling and leading to feelings of satiety - Polyphenols (Specifically ellagitannins and catechins) - Converted to bioavailable urolithins, which promote insulin and GLP-1 secretion - Bind to the bitter taste receptors in the intestine promoting GLP-1 secretion - Inhibit NFkB to lead to feelings of satiety - Dietary Fibre (Xylans and Xyloglucans) - Provide food to the microbiome that is converted into SCFA’s - Triggers the release of GLP-1 and PYY - PYY inhibits ghrelin , a hunger promoting hormone Read more about the mechanism of actions here: [Read more](https://feiolix.com/download/40/publicly_accessible/2835/feiolix_moa.pdf) Feiolix® is a patented ingredient ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/blood-suger.png "blood-suger") ### **A method of lowering serum glucose** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/blood-pressure.png "blood-pressure") ### **A method of lowering blood pressure** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/obesity.png "obesity") ### **Preventing or lower obesity** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/diabetese.png "diabetese") ### **Ameliorating symptoms of diabetes** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/download-40.webp "download (40)") ## Feiolix® and Healthy Ageing Managing your weight has so many downstream effects. The study was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm clinical trial. There were 97 participants ranging from **18-75 years old** with fasting plasma glucose levels in the prediabetic range. Participants consumed Feiolix (1150mg) or placebo over the **6 month** **course** of the study. In the first two months participants were on a low energy diet (800 calories a day) designed to lower weight and metabolic markers significantly and then for the following 4 months, participants were on a weight manteninace diet. The point of this design was to see if Feiolix could help with the rebound effect. **Key Takeaways:** - **Feiolix significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose compared to placebo over 6 months.** - 185% improvement in FPG in Feiolix group compared to placebo at 6 months - **Feiolix led to significant reduction in systolic blood pressure compared to placebo** - 9mmHG reduction in 2 months, equivalent to a reduction in risk of major cardiovascular events by 20% - No significant safety concerns were reported at the studied dose. - This study supports Feiolix’s positioning as a safe, effective ingredient for supporting metabolic health in at-risk populations. They are a seasonal plant, with the trees producing fruit in autumn (March – June in the southern hemisphere). **HOW DO YOU SAY “FEIJOA”?** **In New Zealand, feijoa is usually pronounced “fee-jo-uh” or “fay-jo-uh” with an English ‘J’ sound.** However, it can also be pronounced “fee-zhow-uh” or “fei- zhow-uh”, if using a Portuguese ‘J’ sound or in American English it is pronounced “fei-ow-uh” with a Spanish ‘J’ sound. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/feijoa-fruit-400x293.png "feijoa-fruit") botanical name = *Acca sellowiana or Feijoa sellowiana* **FEIOLIX IS MADE FROM THE WHOLE FEIJOA, INCLUDING THE SKINS, SO YOU KNOW YOU ARE GETTING ALL OF THE FRUIT’S NATURAL GOODNESS.** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/feiolix-fruit-with-flower.jpg "feiolix-fruit-with-flower") **LOVED BY NEW ZEALANDERS** Feijoas are grown extensively throughout New Zealand with many Kiwis having a feijoa tree or two in their backyard. When in season, feijoas are gobbled up by New Zealanders with the bulk of produce ending up in the local market (less than 10% is exported). They’re usually eaten by cutting them in half horizontally and scooping out the jelly-like flesh with a spoon, usually with the skin discarded, although some will eat the fruit skin and all. **UNIQUE, FLORAL AROMA AND TASTE** Feijoa has quite a distinctive and unique aroma and taste. The aroma is very strong and floral and people describe its taste as a mix of pineapple, banana, mint, strawberry and guava flavours. ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/feijoapanelbacktextupdated.jpg "feijoapanelbacktextupdated") **NUTRIENT CONTENT** Feijoas are a nutrient rich fruit. They contain a good amount of vitamin C, along with high levels of polyphenols and dietary fibre. If you’re brave enough to also eat the skins, then you get an additional boost of dietary fibre and polyphenols. # **Feiolix – farm to gate story** [Hear from our science team ](https://feiolix.com/science-story/) [Metabolic health syndrome with patented feiolix ](https://feiolix.com/science-story/) [Check out our blog ](https://feiolix.com/blog/) --- ### [Feijoa Powder Metabolic Health Support](https://feiolix.com/yoga-home/) **Published:** May 7, 2021 **Author:** anagenix **Content:** # FeioliX® clinically proven to support metabolic health [WATCH THE VIDEO](https://youtu.be/RT03wZ4yhj4) FEIOLIX® NATIVE GLP-1 ENHANCER [CONTACT US](https://feiolix.com/contact-us/) ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_Science-01.png) SCIENTIFICALLY SUPPORTED ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_bloodglucose-01.png) REDUCE BLOOD GLUCOSE & HbA1c **0.86 reducation in HbA1c** in **humans** over 12 weeks Comparable to Metformin ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_cholesterol-01.png) REDUCE BLOOD TRIGLYCERIDES **Reduction in** - blood triglycerides - total cholesterol - systolic blood pressure ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_waistmeasurement-01.png) PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN **24% less weight gain** in mice fed a high fat diet ## HOW FEIOLIX® WORKS ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/AGX-Feiolix-Feijoa.png "AGX-Feiolix-Feijoa") ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Doug-Rosendale-Chief-Scientist.png "Doug Rosendale Chief Scientist") *“Feiolix is an anti-inflammatory insulin sensitiser. When operating efficiently, this metabolic engine helps balance energy intake and expenditure, regulating body weight and ensuring optimal health. However, disruptions in this system can lead to metabolic imbalances, contributing to weight gain or loss and potentially setting the stage for conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Recent research has illuminated the significant role of hormones such as **Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1)** in this intricate balance. GLP-1 is a hormone secreted by the intestines that helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. When functioning effectively, GLP-1 enhances insulin secretion, slows gastric emptying, and promotes a feeling of fullness, all of which contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and metabolic equilibrium. In this webinar, you will explore how GLP-1 supports weight regulation and metabolic health. Learn about its impact on insulin sensitivity, appetite control, and how Feiolix, a natural GLP-1 agonist, offers an innovative approach to support weight management and ease menopausal symptoms. Discover the latest advancements in GLP-1 research and how these insights can enhance your understanding of metabolic health. ![GLP-1](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%271000%27%20height%3D%27667%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%201000%20667%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%271000%27%20height%3D%27667%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E) ![glp-1](data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%27%20width%3D%271920%27%20height%3D%271280%27%20viewBox%3D%270%200%201920%201280%27%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%271920%27%20height%3D%271280%27%20fill-opacity%3D%220%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E) We have discussed: - **Metabolism** and the **GLP-1 pathway** - **Feiolix** and **Abscisic Acid**: **a natural GLP-1 agonist** alternative to synthetic semiglutides to support insulin secretion and glucose absorption. - Anagenix and Auckland University’s **six-month metabolic health clinical study** - Market acceptance testing **results in menopause** - **Synbiotic study** with key probiotics strains to support Feiolix’s impact on metabolism and menopause [Register Now](https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/2317264486689/WN_jpdGvwF8QnuxKeO0tmCLGw) ## Meet the Speakers ### Phillipa Thomson Phillipa is our product expert for **Feiolix and BerriQi.** Her research has focused on **NZ-based plant biomedical science**. WHAT IS METABOLIC HEALTH? Metabolic health is the effective conversion of energy that we consume through food and drink into energy we expend moving, thinking, and simply existing. This balance is regulated through a system of hormones that control hunger and satiety, as well as nutrient absorption, storage, and utilisation. Metabolic health is typically measured using the following criteria (see table). ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Metabolic-Health-Critetia-Table1-Science-Story.png "Metabolic Health-Critetia-Table1-Science-Story") 1 Araujo, J., Cai J., Stevens J. Prevalence of optimal metabolic health in American adults: national health and nutrition examination survey 2009 – 2016. Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, 2019, 17(1): 46-52 # WHAT DETERMINES METABOLIC HEALTH? Nutrition Exercise Age Pre dispositions Hormone balance ### **These are the primary determinants of metabolic health** While nearly all hormones influence metabolism, the main hormone that determines whether nutrients are absorbed, utilised, or stored for later use is INSULIN. Maintaining insulin sensitivity is central to maintaining health and vitality. Insulin is secreted from the pancreas in response to consumption of food. Carbohydrates broken down into glucose elicit the strongest insulin response, while protein broken down into amino acids elicit a moderate insulin response, whereas fats broken down into fatty acids elicit a minor insulin response from the pancreas. Insulin secreted into the blood stream triggers muscle cells to absorb glucose from the blood so it can be used for energy. Overtriggering insulin secretion eventually causes loss of insulin sensitivity. **Glucose/Insulin Reaction to Macronutrients** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/glucose-and-insulin.jpg "glucose-and-insulin") ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Starin-McKeen-Scientist.png "Starin McKeen Scientist") *“Metabolic health influences both quality and quantity of life- meaning that maintaining metabolic health can add years to one’s lifespan, but it also enhances quality of life because metabolic health amounts to having more energy to expend, rather storing energy in unhelpful places around the body.”* – STARIN MCKEEN, SCIENTIST # What happens when our bodies lose sensitivity to insulin? - Levels of glucose and fatty acids rise in the blood stream after eating, and circulate at higher level for longer before being absorbed into muscles, adipose tissue, and nerve cells - This is measured as blood glucose, HbA1c, and blood triglycerides - Mitochondria, the power houses within cells, are less efficient and slower to use glucose and fatty acids for energy - Inflammatory molecules are produced and circulate throughout the body - Hunger and appetite signals are imbalanced leading to cravings and overeating - Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome which may lead to bowel discomfort ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/happy-young-woman-standing-against-white-wall-eating-fruit-salad.jpg "happy-young-woman-standing-against-white-wall-eating-fruit-salad") # How can we restore and maintain insulin sensitivity? ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/inflamation-01-copy_small.png "inflamation-01 copy_small") **Reduce inflammation (Schenk et al)** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/muscles-01-copy_small.png "muscles-01 copy_small") **Increase glucose transport from the blood stream to be utilised by skeletal muscle and brown adipose tissue (active fat)** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/nutrientbalance-01_small.png "nutrientbalance-01_small") **Consume balanced nutrients for energy expended** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/gutmicrobes-01P_small.png "gutmicrobes-01P_small") **Maintain a healthy gut microbiome** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/DogMorph.gif "DogMorph") HOW DOES FEIOLIX RESTORE AND MAINTAIN INSULIN SENSITIVITY AND METABOLIC HEALTH? ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/patent_trans-01-e1651198547552-300x126.png) **Feiolix contains 3 primary classes of bioactive compounds that support metabolic health through multiple systems:** - Abscisic acid - Polyphenols (Pedunculagin) - Dietary fibre (xyloglucans) # WHAT IS ABSCISIC ACID AND WHAT DOES IT DO? Abscisic acid is a universal signalling hormone, meaning both plants and animals produce this molecule and express receptors for this molecule (Olds 2018). In plants, abscisic acid is associated with fruit ripening and the separation of fruit from stem. In humans, abscisic acid is normally secreted from the pancreas at very low concentrations along with insulin. Abscisic acid binds to LANCL2 receptors which have been found on many cell types including pancreatic cells, muscle cells, adipose tissue, and nervous system tissues (Sturla 2009). In all of these tissues, abscisic acid increases the action of GLP-1, which enhances insulin secretion and reduces glucagon secretion. Glucagon operates oppositely than insulin. Furthermore, in the **pancreas**, when abscisic acid binds to the LANCL2 receptors a signalling cascade occurs which ultimately stimulates the release of insulin before blood glucose levels get too high (Bruzzone 2008). **Abscisic acid is an insulin secretogogue.** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/skeletalmuscle-01-200x200.png "skeletalmuscle-01") In **skeletal muscles** and brown **adipose tissue** (a special type of fat cells), when abscisic acid binds to their LANCL2 receptors it ultimately increases the expression of genes in the mitochondria involved in the metabolism of glucose and fatty acids (Zocchi 2017). This has also been measured as increase in post-prandial thermogenesis: increased energy utilisation after consuming a meal, leading to heat generation. Further increased thermogenesis may be attributed to the activation of brown adipose tissue to absorb and use glucose (Sturla 2017). **Abscisic acid is thermogenic.** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Centralnervsys-01-200x200.png "Centralnervsys-01") In the **central nervous system,** when abscisic acid binds to LANCL2 receptors it inhibits inflammatory processes (Leber 2020). Reduced inflammation in the central nervous is crucial for maintaining insulin sensitivity as well as appropriate hunger and satiety signalling (Sanchez-Sarasua 2016, Schenk 2008). **Abscisic acid is anti-inflammatory and supports appetite regulation.** ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Doug-Rosendale-Chief-Scientist.png "Doug Rosendale Chief Scientist") *“ Abscisic acid also increases the number of mitochondria and activity of mitochondria in fat cells, which translates as increased energy utilisation, or thermogenesis. The polyphenols in Feiolix are also potent anti-inflammatory molecules, which create an environment for insulin to be more effective. “* – DOUG ROSENDALE, CHIEF SCIENCE OFFICER # PATENTED INGREDIENT ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/fomula.jpg "fomula") # WHAT ARE ELLAGITANNINS, PEDUNCULAGINS, AND UROLITHINS AND WHAT DO THEY DO? **Pedunculagin** is an ellagitannin, a type of polyphenol found in Feijoas. Ellagitannins are too large to be absorbed directly by humans, but after being broken down in the stomach their byproducts are used by microbes which convert them into a class of metabolite called urolithins. **Ellagitannins** are best known for their anti-inflammatory effects. Most of these effects are mediated by urolithins, where the effects are significant reduction in inflammatory molecules in the brain, heart, liver, and adipose tissue, all of which are implicated in metabolic syndrome (Toney 2021). Urolithins are anti-inflammatory. This anti-inflammatory effect in the brain may also support appetite regulation. **Urolithins** are insulin secretagogues, much like abscisic acid. However, urolithins work through an alternative pathway, which helps to further sensitise pancreatic B cells to lower levels of glucose (Bayle 2019). Similar to abscisic acid, urolithins increase energy expenditure in brown adipose tissue and promote the browning of white adipose tissue (Xia 2020). Urolithins are thermogenic. # WHAT ARE XYLOGLUCANS AND WHAT DO THEY DO? Xyloglucans are a type of plant cell wall hemicellulose polysaccharides found in Feijoas. Xyloglucans support the action of bile acids in the intestines: bile acids improve lipid absorption and metabolism (Yamatoya 2011). Xyloglucans also bind glucose in the intestines, slowing absorption into the blood stream, reducing post prandial glycemic peaks (Nishinari 2020). **Xyloglucans normalise blood glucose and blood triglycerides.** Xyloglucans cannot be broken down by human enzymes but some beneficial species of microbiota in the gut are able to utilise them. One of the byproducts of this fermentation is propionate, a short chain fatty acid that promotes satiety. **Xyloglucans help regulate appetite.** # Feiolix provides potent metabolic support: **24%** less weight gain **0.86%** reduction in HbA1c (3 month blood glucose average) **36.3 mg/dL** reduction in fasting blood glucose **38 mg/dL** reduction in blood triglycerides **17.5 mg/dL** reduction in total cholesterol **18.1 mg/dL** reduction in LDL (bad) cholesterol **6.7 mmHg** reduction in systolic blood pressure ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/patent-01-copy_white-e1651197865389-300x128.png) ![](http://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_Science-01.png) SCIENTIFICALLY SUPPORTED ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_bloodglucose-01.png) REDUCE BLOOD GLUCOSE & HbA1c **0.86 reducation in HbA1c** in **humans** over 12 weeks Comparable to Metformin ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_cholesterol-01.png) REDUCE BLOOD TRIGLYCERIDES **Reduction in** - blood triglycerides - total cholesterol - systolic blood pressure ![](https://feiolix.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/bw_waistmeasurement-01.png) PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN **24% less weight gain** in mice fed a high fat diet #### **References** Bayle, M., Neasta, J., Dall’Asta, M., Gautheron, G., Virsolvy, A., Quignard, J.
