WHAT IS A FEIJOA?
Feiolix is a whole fruit powder, made from a distinctive, fragrant fruit called Feijoas.
Feijoas are a small green fruit, about the size of a chicken egg. They are a seasonal plant, with the trees producing fruit in autumn (March – June in the southern hemisphere).
HOW DO YOU SAY “FEIJOA”?
In New Zealand, feijoa is usually pronounced “fee-jo-uh” or “fay-jo-uh” with an English ‘J’ sound.
However, it can also be pronounced “fee-zhow-uh” or “fei- zhow-uh”, if using a Portuguese ‘J’ sound or in American English it is pronounced “fei-ow-uh” with a Spanish ‘J’ sound.

Feijoas are grown extensively throughout New Zealand with many Kiwis having a feijoa tree or two in their backyard. When in season, feijoas are gobbled up by New Zealanders with the bulk of produce ending up in the local market (less than 10% is exported). They’re usually eaten by cutting them in half horizontally and scooping out the jelly-like flesh with a spoon, usually with the skin discarded, although some will eat the fruit skin and all.
UNIQUE, FLORAL AROMA AND TASTE
Feijoa has quite a distinctive and unique aroma and taste. The aroma is very strong and floral and people describe its taste as a mix of pineapple, banana, mint, strawberry and guava flavours.
NUTRIENT CONTENT
Feijoas are a nutrient rich fruit. They contain a good amount of vitamin C, along with high levels of polyphenols and dietary fibre. If you’re brave enough to also eat the skins, then you get an additional boost of dietary fibre and polyphenols.
